Room Change Requests

Sometimes students’ housing assignments are not exactly what they hoped for, especially at first. However, after moving in and allowing time for adjustment, many find they are happy with their assignment. Attitude plays an important role in adjusting to many new things in college, and we encourage students to approach their living environment in an open and positive manner.

Conflicts with roommates, even roommates who have been longtime friends, are almost inevitable, as learning to communicate effectively and compromise take time and effort. Students who experience roommate conflicts may wish to complete a roommate agreement and/or have roommate mediation. Please contact your RA or your Community Director for guidance and assistance. See the Roommate Success page for more resources on navigating communication with your roommates.

For students who do wish to try to move, HRC considers room change requests in the order that they are submitted, with consideration for the nature of the request and available space. Students who request medical accommodation must submit a Medical Accommodation Request. Room change requests are only requests, and our ability to make any change depends upon availability of space.

If you are interested in a room type that has very limited or no availability, consider updating your request form to include more options. Flexibility in room type can maximize your chances that we can offer you options.

If something in your situation has changed since submitting the form, you can edit your request.

  • Fall Room Change Requests

The fall room change request form is now available in the housing portal. Please note that requests will not begin being reviewed until late August or early September, once move-in has concluded and occupancy checks are underway.

Requests are generally considered in the order that they are submitted, with consideration for the nature of the request and available space. Some requests cannot be granted because of limited space. Fall requests begin being reviewed in early September as vacancies are verified across residence halls, and are typically considered until mid-November.

Fall requests that are not granted are not automatically carried over to spring. Residents still interested in changing spaces can complete the Spring Room Change Request Form.

Please note, your request is only a request.

  • Spring Room Change Requests

The spring room change request form typically opens in December. Requests begin being reviewed in mid-January and are considered through early to mid-April. Spring room change requests will be processed beginning mid-to-late January, once spring semester occupancy checks are completed.

Requests are generally considered in the order that they are submitted, with consideration for the nature of the request and available space. Some requests cannot be granted because of limited space. Requests that were not granted are not automatically carried over to spring; if you are still interested in a room change, please submit a new room change request for spring.

Please note, your request is only a request.

  • Summer Room Change Requests

Due to space limitations, room change requests are generally not considered over the summer.

Room Changes Prior to Fall Move-In

Due to space limitations, HRC cannot consider changes to housing assignments over the summer. There will be a room change request period available fall semester for students who are interested in changing their assignment. Requests will be accommodated as space allows, beginning in mid-late September.

Room Change Process

  1. Submit the Form

Submit the room change request form under “requests” on the housing portal, when available.

  2. Staff Review

The Assignments team will review requests and compare to available space.

Don’t expect an immediate response. Requests are generally considered in the order received, considering request type, location, and gender.

  3. Room Change Offer Made

If there is availability and you are offered a space, you will receive an email. Offer info will include building, room type info, and cost, and a specific deadline to accept or decline the space.

  4. Move Scheduling and Instructions

If you accept an offer, specific instructions are provided on how to get new keys, return your current keys, etc. Residents typically have about two days to move into the new room and out of their old one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I guaranteed a room change?

No. Room changes depend on your request type and available space. Because demand is higher than availability, many students may not receive a room change, especially those wanting to move to a space with an individual bedroom.

When might I receive an offer?

It is not possible to predict a timeline, as our ability to make an offer depends on available space, the type of request, and how many others may have submitted the same type of request earlier than yours. If you don’t hear anything specific about your request, it could mean other requests are still ahead of yours or there is no availability. Even when there is availability, it takes time to work through the list of requests and set up room changes, so please be patient.

There is availability in the building/room type I’m interested in. Why haven’t I been made an offer yet?

Current availability frequently changes as other residents change spaces or leave UA. There are likely other requests ahead of yours as well.

Will I know the room number or roommate information before deciding?

Because of privacy laws, we do not share room numbers and roommate details before a room change is finalized. This means you would need to decide without that information if offered a space.

What if I need to move because of issues with my roommate?

Please reach out to your RA or Community Director/Hall Coordinator for support. You may have to remain living with your current roommate(s) unless you are willing to move where space is available. You are also encouraged to use our embedded counselor as a resource. Learn more at our Student Counseling Resources page.

If my request is granted, will there be moving help?

RAs and housing staff do not assist with moving. Carts may be available but are not guaranteed; most students enlist friends for help.

What will I do if my request is granted and I move to a different residential parking zone?

You can contact Parking Services to request to exchange your parking pass for the new zone.

What if I have a scholarship?

Students are responsible for finding out what their scholarship covers. Generally, if you are moving to a room type more expensive than what your scholarship covers, you would be responsible for the difference (prorated based on moving date).

I don’t want to move, but there is an opening in my room that I want my friend to take. Do I need to submit the form?

No. Only the student who is actually requesting to move needs to complete the form.
