UA Housing Partners with Epilepsy Foundation Alabama for Training Opportunities

Housing and Residential Communities (HRC) introduced a new professional development opportunity for Resident Advisors (RAs) ahead of the Fall 2026 semester. HRC recently partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation Alabama to provide Seizure Recognition and First Aid (SFA) certification training to interested RAs during fall staff training.

By participating in this specialized training, more than 20% of this year’s RAs gained valuable knowledge and skills to recognize the signs of a seizure and respond appropriately in emergency situations. The training helps ensure that student leaders are prepared to provide informed support while fostering a more inclusive residential community.

This partnership also connects HRC with a new student organization called Students for Epilepsy Support and Education (SESE). “My hope for SESE is to build a community for UA students living with epilepsy while also serving as an educational resource for anyone who wants to learn more, get involved, and help make our campus more informed and supportive,” said Elaina Burt, an ambassador for the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama and founder of SESE at UA. Together, these efforts aim to build awareness, provide education, and create a stronger support network for students living with epilepsy on campus.

According to the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama, more than 54,000 Alabamians are living with active epilepsy, and 1 in 10 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime. These statistics highlight the importance of seizure awareness and first aid education, particularly in residential communities where students live, learn, and support one another.

By investing in training opportunities like Seizure Recognition and First Aid certification, HRC continues to equip student leaders with the tools they need to respond confidently and compassionately when community members need assistance. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to student wellbeing and to ensuring that all students have access to a supportive campus experience.
